Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
