Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important political figure commented the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
